The most widely used business software in the country, and genuinely good at the job it was built for. Accounts and GST, handled properly, running inside a week. Every accountant in India already knows it.
Then you start making something. Tally has no bill of materials, no work orders, no shop floor tracking and no job costing. So manufacturers run Tally for the books and a register or an Excel file for production, and end up reconciling two versions of the truth every month. A proper manufacturing ERP removes that second system entirely.
Zoho
Cheap to start, quick to set up, and the modules talk to each other properly. For a team of twelve it is a fair first step.
The pricing is the catch, not the product. Per user per month looks small until you are paying it forty times. Work out the three year figure before you commit, because by year two a subscription usually overtakes a one time build, and by then your processes and your data live inside somebody else's platform.
Odoo
Flexible and modular on paper. In practice everything depends on who implements it, and the gap between a good partner and a poor one is enormous. Pick wrong and you can spend a year and a serious budget arriving somewhere worse than where you started.
There is a second problem people notice later. Anything genuinely specific to your trade becomes custom development on top of Odoo. At that point you are paying platform fees and build costs for one system.
SAP Business One
A serious product, built for serious scale, and sold constantly to Indian companies nowhere near that scale. With several plants and a matching budget it earns the money. With thirty staff and one unit you will spend months configuring things you never switch on, then pay to maintain them.
Rollout runs three to six months. Every change afterwards goes through a certified partner, at partner rates.
Marg ERP
Well established in pharmaceutical distribution, with batch, expiry and scheme handling built in rather than bolted on. Inside that trade it does the job. Step outside distribution and it thins out fast, manufacturing depth is limited, and the interface looks its age next to anything cloud based.
ERPNext
Open source, no licence fee. Which sounds free, and is not. You still pay for implementation, hosting, customisation and somebody who can keep it running. Businesses without technical staff in house usually spend more in total than a straightforward build would have cost, and carry the maintenance themselves afterwards.
Busy Accounting Software
Popular with small Indian traders, solid on GST and inventory, sensibly priced. Same limitation as Tally though. It is accounting software with stock features, not an ERP, and that difference turns into a real problem the day you start manufacturing or sending work out.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
Capable, and a sensible choice if your company already runs deep on Microsoft. The per user cost puts it beyond most Indian SMEs, rollout takes three to six months, and you are tied to Microsoft licensing for as long as you use it.
Oracle NetSuite
Built for groups running across several entities, currencies and countries. If that is not your business, you are buying capability you will never open at a price that assumes you will.

Who trains your staff, and in what language?
