On most of our website projects, the step that runs late isn't design or code. It's the content. The logo file is buried in someone's old email, the About page has been "almost ready" for three weeks, and the product photos are still on the owner's phone.
The build itself is fairly predictable. A 5 to 10 page business website usually takes 1 to 3 weeks to build, a site you can edit yourself 3 to 6 weeks, an online store 4 to 10 weeks and a custom web app 2 to 6 months. Add the brief, the content and the testing around it, and a typical 12-page business site goes from first call to launch in 4 to 8 weeks.
I'm Keshav, and I look after performance marketing at GIT Infosys. That means I usually meet a website twice: at the brief, and in the months after launch, when it either brings in enquiries or doesn't. This guide covers the 8 steps in between, what you need to hand over at each one, how long each takes, and where projects tend to get stuck.
What Is the Website Development Process?
Short answerThe website development process is the order of work that takes a site from idea to launch: brief, sitemap, content, design, build, testing, launch, and care after launch. Agencies name the steps differently, but nearly all of them follow this sequence.
Some steps overlap. Content is usually written while the design is being drawn, and testing starts on the first finished pages rather than the last. What shouldn't overlap is design and build. Coding pages before the design is approved is one of the quickest ways for a project to go over budget, because every change gets made twice.
A Typical Timeline, Week by Week
Here's how the steps usually fit together for a 12-page business website with a CMS, which is an admin panel you can edit yourself. It's a planning example, not a promise. Your own timeline depends mostly on how quickly content and feedback come back.

Look at what development waits for. It can't start until the design is approved and most of the content is in, so a week's delay on content usually turns into a week's delay on launch. Step 8, care after launch, starts the day after and never really ends.
How Long Each Type of Website Takes, and What It Costs
The steps stay the same for every kind of site. What changes is how long the design and build take.
| Type of website | What it includes | Build time | Price in India (before 18% GST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landing page | One long page built to collect enquiries | 3 to 10 days | ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 |
| Basic business website | 5 to 10 pages, changed by a developer | 1 to 3 weeks | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 |
| CMS website | 10 to 25 pages, a blog and an admin panel | 3 to 6 weeks | ₹30,000 to ₹1,50,000 |
| Online store | Catalogue, cart, payments and an order dashboard | 4 to 10 weeks | ₹50,000 to ₹5,00,000 |
| Custom web app | Bookings, portals, dashboards and logins | 2 to 6 months | ₹1,50,000 to ₹10,00,000 |
Time and price grow with features and logins far more than with page count. A 40-page brochure site is still quicker to build than a 10-page site where customers log in and pay.
These figures come from our full guide to website development cost in India, which breaks the prices down by platform and city. If you're not sure which kind of site you need, our guide to the types of web development explains each one in plain words.
The 8 Steps of Website Development
Brief and discovery
Week 1 · 2 to 4 days
Everything later depends on this step, and it's the one people most want to rush. A good agency will ask you:
- What should a visitor do on the site? Call, send a WhatsApp message, book, or buy.
- Who are they, and what do they search for before they find you?
- Which two or three competitor sites do you like, and what annoys you about them?
- What's the budget, and is there a real deadline, like a product launch or an exhibition?
- Who on your side approves things? One person is best.
What comes out is a one-page brief and a fixed quote. If nobody can say in one sentence what the home page should get people to do, the brief isn't finished yet.
Sitemap and wireframes
Weeks 1 to 2 · 3 to 5 days
A sitemap at this stage is simply the list of pages and how they link together. The XML sitemap you give to Google comes later, at launch. A wireframe is a rough layout of each page in grey boxes: where the heading goes, where the enquiry form sits, and what shows first on a phone.
This is the cheapest point to change your mind. Moving a section on a wireframe takes minutes. Moving it after the page is built can take hours.
It's also where you decide what each page is for in Google. Give every search term one page, because two pages chasing the same term end up competing with each other. We learnt that on our own site. In 2026 we had three pages all aimed at web design in Jaipur, and they kept getting in each other's way in search results. Two of them now redirect to the third, and we're still sorting it out.
Content
Weeks 2 to 4 · runs alongside design
This is the step that slips. Content means every word, photo and file that goes on the site, and most of it has to come from you, because only you know your prices, your team and your customers.
Write it before the design is finished, not after. A design drawn around dummy text looks lovely until your real 600-word service page goes in, and then the layout falls apart. If writing isn't your thing, pay for a copywriter. It usually costs less than three extra weeks of a half-finished site. The full list of what to hand over is further down this page.
Design
Weeks 2 to 3 · 1 to 2 weeks
The designer draws the home page and one inner page first, usually in Figma. Once you approve those, the other pages follow the same style. Agree in the quote how many rounds of changes are included. Two rounds is common.
Ask to see the phone version first. In September 2026, 77.3% of web traffic in India came from mobile phones, according to StatCounter. A layout that only works on a wide screen is built for less than a quarter of your visitors.
Check the colours as well. The WCAG accessibility guidelines ask for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text, which rules out light grey text on white. If you don't have a logo or brand colours yet, get your logo and brand design done before this step starts. Design on its own usually costs ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 for a full business website.
Development
Weeks 4 to 6 · 2 to 3 weeks
Now the approved design becomes working pages. The developer sets up the platform (WordPress, Shopify or custom code), builds each page template, connects the forms and adds your content.
Good agencies build on a staging link, which is a private copy of the site that only you and they can see. You should get that link early and be able to click around while the work is going on, not just at the end. If you chose a CMS website, this is also when you get a short training session on editing pages and adding blog posts. Ask for it to be recorded.
Speed gets decided here more than anywhere else. Google's Core Web Vitals ask for the main content to appear within 2.5 seconds, the page to respond to a tap within 200 milliseconds, and a layout shift score of 0.1 or less, which means the page doesn't jump around while it loads. Whether you build on a ready-made theme or a fresh design also affects speed. We compared the two in our post on template vs bespoke websites.
From our audit work · Colours India Tours, Jaipur
When we audited the Colours India Tours website on 21 August 2026, we found 99.2 MB of images across its 53 pages. 110 of the 193 images were over 200 KB, and the biggest single file was 3.1 MB. Every blog page loaded the same 34 images, so each one weighed 30 to 34 MB, and the main content took 6.6 seconds to appear on mobile.
The writing on the site is good. The weight is a development problem, and it's much easier to prevent during the build, by resizing and compressing every image before it goes up, than to fix afterwards across 53 pages.
Testing and sign-off
Weeks 6 to 7 · 3 to 5 days
The agency tests first, then you do. Don't skip your turn. You'll spot a wrong price or an old phone number faster than any developer will. Things worth checking yourself:
- Every form, by sending a real enquiry and checking it reaches the right inbox or WhatsApp number.
- The site on an ordinary Android phone over mobile data, not just on office Wi-Fi.
- Chrome, Safari for iPhone users, and one other browser.
- Every phone number, email address and map pin.
- Page speed, using Google's free PageSpeed Insights.
- Alt text on images and the order of headings, which screen readers rely on.
Once you're happy, sign off in writing. That's often the point where the remaining payment falls due.
Launch
Week 7 · 1 day
Launch day is mostly a checklist:
- Point the domain at the new hosting and check it opens with and without "www".
- Install the SSL certificate so the site opens on https.
- Switch off the "noindex" or "Discourage search engines" setting used on staging. It's easy to forget, and it keeps the whole site out of Google.
- Add 301 redirects from every old page address if you're replacing a site.
- Submit the XML sitemap in Google Search Console and set up Google Analytics.
- Check every file path against the live server before copying anything across.
Launch early in the week and early in the day, so there's a full working day to fix whatever breaks. If you're replacing an older site, read our notes on website redesign first, because redirects are where a lot of the old site's Google traffic is either kept or lost.
From our client work · iProductRepair, Bangalore
In September 2026 we built new service pages for iProductRepair, an Apple repair business in Bangalore. Before handing them to their developer, we checked every file path the new pages used against the live site. One of them, /assets/css/style.css, already existed there as the stylesheet for the whole site.
If our file had gone up with that name, it would have replaced their theme's stylesheet and broken every existing page at once. We moved our files into a folder of their own. It took a few minutes to check.
After launch
Every month
A website isn't finished at launch. For the first month, open Google Search Console every week and see which pages Google has found and which it hasn't. On 29 September 2026, Search Console showed that Google didn't know about 122 of the 244 URLs on Lume Loam, one of the online stores we work on for Dekulture, and its weekly impressions had dropped from about 150 to about 20 since 13 September.
After that, the routine is simple. Back up weekly, update the platform and plugins, renew the domain and hosting, and keep adding content. Plan ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a year for domain, hosting and email.
One rule to plan for now: if your forms collect names, phone numbers or email addresses, India's DPDP Act applies to you. Under the DPDP Rules notified on 13 November 2025, the duties on notice and consent apply from 13 May 2027, so it's worth adding a clear consent line to every form while the site is being built. Our post on data privacy myths and facts covers the basics.
What to Hand Over Before the Build Starts
Have these ready at the brief, or at least before design begins, and the content step shrinks from weeks to days.
- Your logo as a vector file (SVG, AI or PDF), not a screenshot from WhatsApp.
- Brand colours and fonts, if you already have them.
- The text for each page, or bullet points a copywriter can work from.
- 10 to 20 real photos of your work, team, shop or products.
- Prices or price ranges, if you're happy to show them.
- Address, GST number, phone, WhatsApp number and opening hours.
- Three to five real customer reviews, with permission to use the names.
- Logins for your domain, hosting and Google Business Profile.
- Links to your social media pages.
NoteKeep the domain and hosting accounts in your own name. If a developer registers them for you, ask for both to be moved to your account before you make the final payment.
Do It Yourself or Hire an Agency?
If the site is a simple brochure and your budget is under ₹15,000, building it yourself is a fair choice. Wix, WordPress.com or a Shopify trial will get a basic site up over two or three weekends, and Shopify's Basic plan in India costs ₹1,499 a month paid yearly. If you'd like to see how a page is put together from scratch, our guide on how to create a website through HTML walks through it.
Hiring help makes sense when:
- the site has to bring in enquiries or sales from the first month
- you need bookings, payments or customer logins
- you'd rather spend your weekends running the business
- you want one person to call when something breaks
If you're in Rajasthan or nearby, our website design and development company in Jaipur page shows our packages. A 5-page website starts at ₹15,000, and a fully custom website costs ₹55,000.
Common Mistakes in the Website Development Process
- Starting design before the brief is agreed. You end up paying for two designs.
- Waiting for perfect content. Launch with honest, simple pages and improve them later. A site stuck on a staging link brings in nothing.
- Too many people approving. Five opinions on one home page can add weeks. Pick one decision-maker.
- Testing only on a laptop. Most of your visitors will see the site on a phone first.
- Forgetting redirects when replacing an old site. Your old Google rankings point at the old page addresses, and without redirects they lead to error pages.
- No plan after launch. Plugins go out of date, the contact form quietly stops working, and nobody notices for months.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the steps in the website development process?
There are usually 8: brief, sitemap and wireframes, content, design, development, testing, launch and care after launch. For a 12-page business site they take about 4 to 8 weeks from the first call to going live.
How long does it take to develop a website?
A basic 5 to 10 page site takes 1 to 3 weeks to build, a CMS site 3 to 6 weeks, an online store 4 to 10 weeks and a custom web app 2 to 6 months. Slow content and feedback add more time than anything else.
What is the first step of website development?
The brief. Before any design or code, agree what the site must do, who it's for, the budget and the deadline. A good brief fits on one page and takes 2 to 4 days to settle.
What does a website development process flowchart look like?
It runs mostly in a straight line: brief, then sitemap, then content and design side by side, then development, testing and launch. Maintenance loops back every month after that, so 7 steps happen once and the 8th repeats.
What is the difference between the web design and web development process?
Design decides how the site looks and works, usually in Figma, and takes 1 to 2 weeks for a business site. Development turns that approved design into working pages, forms and features, which takes 2 to 3 weeks or longer.
How much does it cost to develop a website in India?
From ₹15,000 for a basic 5-page site to ₹1,50,000 or more for a custom web app, before 18% GST. Domain, hosting and email add another ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a year.
What should I give a web developer before the project starts?
Your logo as a vector file, the text for each page, 10 to 20 real photos, prices, contact details and the logins for your domain and hosting. With those in hand, the content step can drop from weeks to a few days.
What is the website development process called in Hindi?
It's usually called वेबसाइट बनाने की प्रक्रिया (website banane ki prakriya). It follows the same 8 steps, from the brief to care after launch.
